NORFOLK, VA-- Junior Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL) and senior Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA) each hit two triples to lead Old Dominion (19-3) to a 10-4 non-conference win over Radford (3-13) on Wednesday at the Bud Metheny Complex. Arrowood finished the day with 3 RBI and leads the team in triples with 5. It was the first time in school history that more than one player hit two triples in the same game.
In the first inning, sophomore Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) and junior Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE) hit back-to-back home runs to put the Monarchs up 2-0. For Keenan, it was his first home run of the season and second of his career. Zahm's blast was his third of 2006.
Radford would answer in the 3rd inning when Nate Toth belted a deep solo shot over the center field fence. Arrowood would cross the plate in the next inning after leading off with a triple and scoring on a Justin Gregula (Washington, PA) ground out.
Once again, the Highlanders would respond to the challenge tying the ballgame at 3-3 in the 5th inning when Toth doubled in a run off of winning pitcher Hunter Hall (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial), and then scored on an RBI groundout.
The Monarchs would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the 5th when Miles tripled to score Jesse Schoendienst (Belcamp, MD) and crossed home himself due to a wild pitch. Arrowood's second triple of the day scored junior Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY) as the Monarchs took their lead to 6-3.
Miles tripled again in the 7th and scored along with Zahm when Arrowood knocked a single. The scoring for both teams would end in the 8th after Zahm knocked in two runners with a single.
Arrowood is now 9-13 hitting in the past three games, and has seen his team-leading batting average climb to .507 on the season. Miles is batting .438 this season, with a team-high 46 hits. Zahm finished the day with three RBI, and now has 27 on the year.
Hall took over in relief for starter David Wagner, and gave up 2 runs in 1.1 innings of work to pick up the mound victory. He is now 4-0 on the season. Freshman Ross Fetterly (Norfolk, VA/Granby) hurled 3.2 innings of hitless, scoreless relief to earn his second career save. Fetterly now sports a 1.64 ERA, ranking second on the team in that category.
Toth finished the day with three hits, three RBI, and two runs scored to lead the way for the Highlanders. Will Naylor, David Landman, and Aaron Ranft contributed two hits apiece.
The Monarchs return to the diamond on Friday as they travel to Atlanta for a three-game set with conference newcomer Georgia State. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
