NORFOLK, VA--Freshman righthander Daniel Hudson (Virginia Beach, Va.) pitched eight-plus innings, scattering seven hits and striking out six to lead ODU (13-3)to a 7-1 victory over defending Atlantic 10 champion Rhode Island (1-2). The Monarchstake two of three in the series.
Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE.) led the Monarchs with four runs batted in. His groundout in the first scored Jimmy Miles (Orlando, Fl.), then in the fifth he slammed a three-run homer with Miles and Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.) aboard. Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) knocked in two runs with a double in the sixth. the other Monarch run came in the third when Cipolla came home from third on a balk.
Rhode Island scored in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Mike O'Malleywhich scored Gregg Allen from third. Allen and Shaun Hagey each had two hits on theday for the Rams.
ODU's defense was key as well, turning four double plays behind Hudson.Fellow freshman Ross Fetterly (Norfolk, VA.) got the final two outs of the game withstrikeouts. Sophomore Chris Keenan had three hits and Junior Steven Dorst (S.San Francisco, CA.) had two for ODU.
ODU returns to action on Wednesday at Radford. The Monarchs then begin CAAPlay Friday at home against George Mason .
