Gunter Hurls Complete Game as ODU Defeats UVA 5-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA- Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ) threw a complete game five-hitter, surrendering one earned run, as the Old Dominion Monarchs took down the Virginia Cavaliers 5-1 in UVA's home opener. ODU improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season, and have outscored their opponents 56-9 during that span. Gunter is now 2-0 on the year.

ODU got on the board in the first inning when Mike Zahm (Elkhorn, NE) knocked in freshman Jimmy Miles (Orlando, Fl) with an RBI single. The Monarchs would also score in the second inning as an Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA) double plated Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA).

Old Dominion broke the game open in the 3rd inning when sophomore Chris Keenan crossed home plate on Tyler Belcher's (Bristol, VA) run scoring single, and senior Justin Gregula (Washington, PA) slammed a two-run homer to give the Monarchs a 5-0 lead.

Virginia would respond in the 4th inning when Sean Dolittle knocked in Tim Henry to put the score at 5-1, but Gunter would clamp down and hold the Cavaliers scoreless the rest of the game. For Virginia, Tom Hagan went 3-4 at the plate, while Dolittle and Henry added two hits apiece.

Gregula and Belcher had two hits each for the Monarchs, and Gregula's home run was his first of the year.

The Monarchs return to action this Friday as they begin a three-game set at home against Navy. Game time for Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
