FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's basketball won its 11th straight on Friday night with an 81-33 victory over George Mason at the Patriot Center for its largest victory of the 2005-06 season. Over the last two games the Lady Monarchs have outscored their opponents by a combined 94 points.
Sophomore T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) led the charge with a season-high 23 points which included a 7-of-11 effort from downtown. Her seven treys tied her career-high and was two shy of tying the Lady Monarch record of three-pointers in a game recorded by Aubrey Eblin.
Also scoring in double figures was senior Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) with 14. Davis narrowly missed her second double-double performance of the season as she ended the night with nine boards. Sophomore spark Shahida Williams (Newark, N.J.) led ODU with 12 rebounds.
The Patriots were only able to score 17 points in the first half and 16 in the second. Not only were the 33 points scored by George Mason the lowest point total allowed by the Lady Monarch defense this season, the 16 points netted by the Patriots tie the lowest points in a half for an ODU opponent this season as well. George Mason's 33 points ties a season low. The Patriots also had 33 points in a 70-33 loss to then #6 Maryland in late December.
George Mason had one in double figures with Jen Daniels collecting 10 points. Collectively, the Patriots shot 23.1 percent from the field and only 33.3 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Monarchs were holding on a 18-14 lead with 10:05 remaining in the first half before going on a 20-3 run to enter the half ahead 38-17.
Old Dominion completely dominated the second half outscoring George Mason, 43-16. The Patriot's Akintunde hit a lay-up at the 11:42 mark to bring the score to 57-30, but it would the another ten and a half minutes before George Mason would see the ball go through the hoop again. During that 10:32 span, the Lady Monarch scored 19 unanswered points. Only Casey Quigley was able to stop the Patriot drought nailing a three-pointer with 1:10 left for Mason's final points of the night.
The victory give ODU its 11th straight and improves the Lady Monarchs to 13-7 overall and 11-0 in the CAA. Meanwhile, the Patriots saw their three-game win streak come to an end as they fall to 8-13 overall and 4-8 in the league. Old Dominion will return to the Patriot Center in just a few short week for the 2006 CAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday when they host Georgia State at 2:00 p.m. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
