EDINBORO, PA - The Old Dominion Wrestling Monarchs defeated Maryland by a final score of 24-7, and Slippery Rock 31-9 at the 2005 Avalon Duals hosted by Edinboro University, Saturday afternoon. ODU fell to host Edinboro in the competition 41-3. Junior Michael Martin (Chesapeake, VA) had to wins by fall at 133, first against Sal Lascari of Slippery Rock in 52 seconds, then over Maryland's Brendan Byrne at 1:22. Martin was recently ranked second at 133 in the CAA preseason individual rankings.
Chesapeake native Bryan LaShomb, a freshman at 125, had an impressive start beating Maryland's James Knox by decision 5-4, and SRU's Chris Clarke in a 10-2 major decision. Senior Nelson Gosnell (Warrenton, VA), the #4 seed at 165, captured his weight class by topping Eli Black of Maryland in a major decision 16-4, and slipping by SRU's Jason Cardillo by a 4-3 decision.
Returning 2004 NCAA qualifier and #2 seed in the CAA preseason individual rankings Adam Wright (Dayton , VA) was the only Monarch to win all three matches on the day wrestling at 197. First, Wright recorded a win by tech fall over Maryland's Jerry Afari 26-10. The senior then went on to beat Jim Gibson of Edinboro by a 6-5 decision and Andrew Joseph of SRU by fall at 4:18.
Also bringing in wins for the Monarchs were Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, VA) at 157 who had wins by decision over Maryland and Slippery Rock's competitors, freshman Ryan Williams (Cumberland, PA) who stepped in for Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA) at 141 to beat David Pinneaar of Slippery Rock, and heavyweight John Dolida (Bridgewater, NJ) who recorded a fall over Matt Burkholder at 4:36.
The wrestling Monarchs start their season off with 2-1 record, they will travel to Columbia, Missouri next weekend as they compete in the Missouri Open. Edinboro advances to 3-0 while Slippery Rock falls to a 0-3 record, and Maryland to 1-2.
