NORFOLK, VA--Senior forward Alex Loughton (Perth, Australia) poured in 17 points to lead the Old Dominion men's basketball team to an 82-58 exhibition victory over the University of Saskatchewan Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Junior forward Arnaud Dahi (Ivory Coast, Africa) added 11 points and nine rebounds, including six offensive boards, on the night.
Loughton, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, hauled down six rebounds and connected on all five of his free throw attempts in 21 minutes of action. The contest featured frequent substitutions by Coach Blaine Taylor, as 11 Monarchs played double digit minutes during the game.
An 19-2 run that began with 17:12 left in the first half broke the game open for ODU. Junior forward Valdas Vasylius (Klaipeda, Lithuiana) scored seven points during the run, en route to finishing with 11 points on 4-5 shooting for the night. The half ended with the Monarchs up by 19 over the Huskies, 44-25.
Both teams would shoot 51% from the floor in the second half, and the Monarchs nailed all of their second half free throw attempts. Saskatchewan kept the second half close, only being outscored 38-33 in the session.
Sophomore guard Brian Henderson (Richmond, VA) contributed 11 points on 5-7 shooting, and sophomore guard Brandon Johnson (Orlando, Fl) dished out a team high six assists on the evening. Junior guard John Morris (Camp Hill, PA) took away four steals in a strong defensive effort.
The defending CAA champions are back in action Saturday November 12th as they take on Virginia State in an exhibition contest to be played at the Ted Constant Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Sasketchewan continues their exhibition tour of Virginia as they face Virginia Tech on Friday. ODU will fly out to St. Thomas on the 18th to take on Georgia in their season opener as part of the Paradise Jam tournament.
