NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team is ranked ninth in the first national poll released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Tuesday morning. The Lady Monarchs (3-3) will travel to #3 North Carolina and #4 Duke this weekend.
In all, 15 Lady Monarch opponents are ranked or receiving votes in this week's poll. Along with the Tar Heels and Blue Devils, #2 Maryland, #5 American, #7 Penn State, and #8 Michigan appear in the Top 10.
The CAA was well represented with the Lady Monarchs leading the pack. CAA newcomer Northeastern was listed at #13, followed by #15 James Madison, #18 William & Mary, and #19 Delaware. Additionally, Towson, Drexel, and Hofstra all received votes.
The next poll will be released on Tuesday, September 20, 2005. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has no bearing on selection to the 2005 NCAA Division I Championship field.
In the national stats released on Tuesday as well, junior Caroline Nichols (Va. Beach, Va.) was tied for 10th in assists, having made five through the Lady Monarchs first six games and tied for fifth in defensive saves with two.
