NORFOLK, VA--The 21st ranked Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs battled the #13 Clemson Tigers to a 0-0 double overtime tie in the championship match of the 30th annual Stihl Soccer Classic. By virtue of winning the fourth tiebreaker, total goals scored in the tournament, the Tigers were awarded the Queen's Cup. The Monarchs finished in second place, and placed three players on the Stihl All-Tournament team- Ross Mackenzie (Midlothian, VA), Yomby William (Cameroon), and John Connelly (Rockville, MD). Phil Marfuggi, a goalkeeper for Clemson, was named the Tournament MVP. The Monarchs extended their home-unbeaten regular season streak to 26 matches with the tie. ODU also ran its record to 2-0-1 on the season, and have only given up one goal in the first three games.
John Connelly earned his second consecutive shutout for the Monarchs, stopping two shots. The Monarchs held a 16-9 advantage in shots taken and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Phil Marfuggi solidified his tournament MVP status by collecting 11 saves on the day for the Tigers. Both teams had three players issued yellow cards during the match. Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY) took five shots, including three shots on goal, to lead the Monarch's offensive attack.
In earlier Stihl Soccer Classic action, the Rhode Island Rams defeated William & Mary 3-2. Lukasz Tumicz and Jeffrey Gonsalves each paced the Rams with a goal and assist. For William & Mary, Brock Jones led off the scoring in the 29th minute when he finished his own shot that deflected off the goalie's hands. Tumicz would tie the game when he would put a deflected free kick into the back of the net in the 48th minute of play. In the 55th minute, Tumicz ran free down the right side of the field and hit a short cross to a waiting Gonsalves who knocked it in to give Rhode Island a 2-1 advantage. Dawid Badecki would later collect a goal off an assist from Gonsalves to give the Rams a two goal cushion. Pat Scherder scored the Tribe's second goal in the 71st minute to cut the lead to one goal.

ODU returns to action Wednesday September 14th at 7:00 p.m. to face Elon at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium. The Monarchs will then hit the road Saturday night to take on the 2nd ranked North Carolina Tarheels in their first road contest of the season.
