NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion sophomore Sami McLenegan (Middletown, Pa.) sent Sunday's field hockey game against Maryland into overtime, netting the tying goal with .2 second left in regulation, but it would the Terps who would score the golden goal to win 2-1.

Maryland's Paula Infante broke away down field in the closing seconds getting past ODU netminder Mary Cate Gordon (Oreland, Pa.) to score the game-winner with 22 seconds left in the first overtime session.

The win upped Maryland's record to 5-0 on the season, while the Lady Monarchs fell to 2-2 and closed out their four-game season opening homestand.

The Terps struck first in the game as Lauren Powley was used on the option on a penalty corner set up by inserter Janneke van Leeuwen and Emily Beach on the stick stop at the 25th minute.

For the next 44 minutes, neither team was able to find the back of the cage setting up a dramatic finish in regulation. Following an injury timeout with only seconds remaining, the Lady Monarchs controlled the ball into the circle and made its way to McLenegan, who fired on the Terp net from inside the left side of the circle. The ball sailed into the back of the Maryland cage to set up the seven-on-seven overtime.

In overtime, the Lady Monarchs were awarded three penalty corners but could not convert. Senior Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, Pa.) was able to fire off two shots off the corners directly on net, but the Terps' Christina Restivo came up with saves both times. Infante intercepted the ball midway through their own territory and tore down the middle of the turf for the game-winner and her fourth goal of the year.

Maryland outshot the Lady Monarchs 12-8, but it was Old Dominion who held the advantage in the penalty corner column taking nine, while the Terps attemped four.

Both ODU's Gordon and Maryland's Restivo collected five saves.

Old Dominion hits the road for its next six games beginning next weekend. The Lady Monarchs travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to take on the Wolverines on Saturday, September 10th and a neutral site contest at Michigan against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, September 11th. Meanwhile, the Terps will host California and Stanford at the annual Terrapin Invitational.
