ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Old Dominion University head women's lacrosse coach, Sue Stahl, will look to guide the U.S. National Women's Lacrosse team to an unprecedented fifth straight IFWLA World Cup Title as competition opens up at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy and the Navy-Marine Crop Memorial Stadium, located just outside of Annapolis, Maryland this week.
Stahl, who has coached the U.S. National Team since 1988, has captured the World Cup Title every year she has been on the sidelines bringing home trophies in 1989 (Australia), 1993 (Scotland), 1997 (Japan), and 2001 (England). The U.S. has won five of the six championships played all-time and is aiming to become the first host nation to win the World Cup.
The quest for the title begins on Thursday as the team opens up play against England, followed by matches against Wales on Friday, Canada on Saturday, and 2001 runner-up Australia on Sunday. This is only the second time the event has been played in the U.S., and the first since 1986.
The International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA) was formed in 1972 to promote and develop the game of women's lacrosse throughout the world. Inaugural members were Australia, England, Scotland, Wales and the United States. The number of member countries has doubled as lacrosse has spread. New member countries are from Asia and Europe- we are now nurturing the interest shown in South America. Promoting all levels of lacrosse includes the IFWLA sponsorship of the World Cup and the Under-19 World Championship Tournaments. Each event is held every 4 years.
