NORFOLK, VA--Men's Basketball junior Alex Loughton (Perth, Australia),and senior sailor Anna Tunnicliffe (Perrysburg, OH) were named Athletes of the Yearby the Old Dominion University Alumni Association. Baseball's James Burok (Archbald, PA.) and women's soccer Ashley Kramer (Jefferson Hills, PA.) were named 2005 Jack Wilkins/ James Howard Scholar Athletes of the Year at the annual Old Dominion University Athletic honors Banquet and Hall of Fame induction held at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Tuesday night.
Alex Loughton helped lead the Monarchs to the school's first CAA championship and NCAA appearance since 1997, and a school record 28 wins. Loughtonaveraged 14.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per, and was the CAA Player of the Year andtournament Most Valuable Player. He earned honorable mention All-American honorsfrom the Associated Press and Basketball Times. He also earned All-Region honorsfrom the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was named Player of theYear in the State of Virginia by the Richmond Times Dispatch and the Virginia SportsInformation Director's Association. Loughton was selected CAA Scholar Athlete of theYear for men's basketball, earned regional and national academic honors from CoSIDA and NACDA. Loughton went over the 1,000 career point mark against Towson and now has 1,188 career points.
Anna Tunnicliffe made collegiate history by claiming her third straightIntercollegiate Sailing Association Women's single-handed national championship,taking the title in October in Minnesota. No individual has ever won three consecutive sailing championships. Tunnicliffe also claimed the MAISA Women's single-handed championship, and took first at the Atlantic Coach and Navy Women's Open with teammate Jen Adams. As a member of the USA National team, Anna took the silvermedal in February at the annual Rolex Miami Olympic Class Regatta. She has alsoearned All-Academic honors and is a two-time collegiate sailing All-American. Tunnicliffe has also been named recipient of the Norfolk Sports Club Tom Scott Awardas the top senior athlete at ODU, and is a two-time Portsmouth Sports ClubCollegiate Athlete of the Year recipient. Tunnicliffe and the Lady Monarch sailingsquad will be competing for the Women's National Championships, June 1-3 inAustin, TX.
The Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athletes of the Year are presentedto the male and female senior athletes with the highest cumulative grade point averages. Both Howard and Wilkins were instrumental in the formation of the Intercollegiate Foundation in 1965.
Ashley Kramer did not play this year due to an injury, but last season she tied forsecond on the team in goals scored and as a sophomore led the team with six. Lastsummer Kramer was the project manager for Cave Automatic Virtual Environment.Upon graduation she will work for Corner Corporation in Kansas City, MO., as asoftware delivery consultant. Kramer is graduating with a 3.78 grade point averagein computer science.
James Burok has been a four-year starter for the Monarchs baseball squad.This year he currently leads the CAA with five saves. He has a 3-4 record with a3.07 earned run average and 49 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched. The righthanderwill graduate with a 3.95 grade point average in finance.
Old Dominion University also inducted four former athletes into the school'sSports Hall of Fame. They included: Odell Hodge (basketball), Kevin Gibbs (baseball),Charlie Ogletree (sailing), and Ronnie Drumwright (track and field).
