Lady Monarchs Upend Hofstra, 78-65

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Lady Monarchs had three with double-doubles as the Old Dominion women's basketball team defeated Hofstra, 78-65, at Hofstra Arena Thursday night. Five Lady Monarchs reached double figures including a team-high 17 by Tish Lyons and a career-high 14 points and 10-rebounds by rookie Shahida Williams.

Old Dominion improved to 19-7 overall and 15-2 in league play and will be a #2 seed at the upcoming CAA Women's Basketball Tournament in Fairfax, Virginia with the Delaware victory over James Madison. Meanwhile, the Pride fall to 12-15 overall and 7-11 in the CAA claiming the seventh spot in the conference.

After Hofstra scored the game's first four points, Old Dominion took control of the contest with a 26-10 run that gave the Lady Monarchs a 26-14 lead with 8:10 left in the first half.

Old Dominion never allowed Hofstra to get any closer than nine in the second half, as they opened the second stanza with a 15-4 run to push their lead up to 20, at 57-37 with 14:33 left. After Hofstra cut the deficit to 17, Williams scored six of the Lady Monarchs eight points during an 8-2 ODU run that pushed the lead up to 23, 67-44, at the 8:27 mark. That would be the Lady Monarchs largest lead of the contest as Hofstra eventually trimmed the deficit to 13 in the closing minutes.

For Hofstra, Cigi McCollin finished with 14 points and three steals for the Pride, while Charlotte Baldrey-Chourio had five points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists in her final home game as a member of the Pride.

Along with Williams in the double-double category, rookie forward Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) notched her eighth double figure scoring and rebounding performance with 11 points and a game-high 11 boards. Green also accumulated five steals in the victory. Additionally sophomore Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.) poured in 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Others in double figures included junior Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) with 10.

Old Dominion will close out the 2004-05 regular season on Sunday when they travel to Drexel for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
