Monarchs Cruise Past Longwood, 88-56

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion men's basketball team cruised to a 88-56 victory over the Longwood Lancers Monday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, improving their season record to 10-1. Isaiah Hunter (Charlotte, NC) led all Monarch scorers with 17 points. Longwood, led in scoring by Lamar Barrett with 17, falls to 1-12 for the season.

After three minutes of play, Longwood held a 8-5 lead, before the Monarchs rolled off 10 straight points to grab a 15-8 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in the half. The Lancers kept their deficit in single digits until the 11:16 mark of the half, when Arnaud Dahi's (Ivory Coast, Africa) three-pointer gave ODU the 23-13 lead. By the 3:40 mark, the Monarchs held a 20 point lead, 37-17, off back-to-back layups by Brian Henderson (Richmond, VA) and Arnaud Dahi. Longwood's Dana Smith cut the lead to 18 points moments later, but ODU took a 44-22 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Monarchs raced out to a 25-point lead, 54-29, with just over 15 minutes left in the game, and extended the lead to 31 points, 60-29, with 13:35 remaining. The Lancers cut the lead down to 24 points with just under 10 minutes left, 63-39, but a 8-2 run by the Monarchs gave ODU a 30-point advantage, with 5:35 left in the game. With 2:23 left in the game, ODU took their largest lead of the game--35 points--85-50, off a pair of free throws by Valdas Vasylius (Klaipeda, Lithuania). Two three pointers by Longwood and a Monarch three pointer by Brian Henderson closed the game out, with the Monarchs taking a 32-point victory, 88-56.

The Monarchs had four players in double-figures for the game, led by Isaiah Hunter's 17 points. Valdas Vasylius had 15 points off the bench in 17 minutes of play, while Alex Loughton chipped in 12 points and Arnaud Dahi scored in double-figures for the fifth consecutive game, adding 11 points. Longwood's Lamar Barrett led the Lancers in scoring with 17 points. For the game, ODU shot over 50% (51.5%) for the fourth time this season, and for the second straight game. The Monarchs also had a 47-35 rebounding edge over Longwood.

ODU wraps up a three-game home-stand Wednesday night, taking on St. Joseph's at 7:00.
