NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior guard Isaiah Hunter (Charlotte, N.C) poured in 20 points and senior guard Kiah Thomas (Norfolk, Va.) added 12 as the Monarch men's basketball team cruised to a 71-42 exhibition win over Elizabeth City State at Ted Constant Convocation Center on Tuesday night.
Hunter shot 8-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while Thomas shot 5-of-7 and added four boards and two steals.
CAA Preseason Player of the Year Alex Loughton (Perth, Australia) nearly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Old Dominion held a commanding 17-4 lead with 12:21 left and led by as many as 21 in opening half of play. After Elizabeth City State cut their deficit to 10, the Monarchs used a 14-3 run capped by a Hunter three-pointer and lay-up for a 21-10 edge with 7:19 remaining in the half. Old Dominion led 38-24 at the half.
The Monarchs outscored their opponent 33-18 in half number two as Old Dominion held at least a 20-point lead for the final 14:18 of the game.
Other highlights from the game included six points, six assists, and three steals from sophomore guard Drew Williamson (Burlington, N.C.) and a seven point, seven board, six assist performance from sophomore reserve Arnaud Dahi (Ivory Coast, Africa).
The Monarchs have one more preseason test before opening the 2004-05 regular season. Old Dominion hosts Carleton University from Canada in exhibition action on Thursday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m. The Monarchs open the regular season on Saturday, November 20th against South Alabama at the Constant Center.
