Va. Beach, Va. -- The Old Dominion duo of Henrique Cancado and Adriano Mello captured the Flight A Doubles title at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational over the weekend highlighting the Monarchs first action of the 2004-05 year.
Cancado, a sophomore, and Mello, a junior, won both their games en-route to the title. In the semi-finals, the Monarch doubles team defeated James Madison's David Emery and Jesse Tar, 8-5, and then went on to defeat American's Nicolas Frayssinoux and Juan Jaysingh, 8-2, in the finals.
Cancado also had a run to the semifinals in the Flight A singles bracket. He defeated Lee University's Manuel Cornejo, 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the quarterfinals to open the tournament. Cancado's run then ended in the seminfinals with a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Campbell's Jiri Beranek, 6-4, 7-5.
