NORFOLK, VA-- Former Old Dominion University basketball All-AmericanMark West will be one of five inductees to the eighth annual HamptonRoads African American Sports Hall of Fame. The banquet will be Oct. 30th.
He will be inducted with William "Bill" Archie (former NSU AD), Otis Sistrunk (Norfolk Neptunes/Oakland Raiders), Ray Crittenden, Jr., (mentor), and Ricky Mahorn (NBA).
Mark West was named honorable mention All-American by The Sporting Newsin 1981 and by the Associated Press in 1982 and 1983. He was also named by Basketball Weekly to its 1980 Freshman All-American squad.
West led the nation in blocked shots twice and was a first team All-SunBelt conference selection as a senior. He grabbed a career high 23rebounds in 1980 against Texas Wesleyan. West is Old Dominion's all-time shot block leader with 446, second in career rebounds with 1,113and in field goal percentage at .559.
West began his NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks, played 17 yearsin the NBA, and is now Assistant General Manager with the PhoenixSuns. His jersey number 45 was retired in 1984. His jersey was alsoretired at Petersburg (Va.) High School. West was inducted into theODU Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
