NORFOLK, VA -The Old Dominion women's soccer team tied a team record for goals scored in a game Sunday afternoon, defeating the Longwood Lancers 6-1 at the ODU Soccer Stadium. The six goals is the most since ODU defeated Mercer 6-1 during the 2000 season. Laura Beeman (Chalfont, PA) led the assault for the Lady Monarchs, with two goals, as ODU improves to 1-1 for the year. The Lancers fall to 0-2.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Monarchs got things going early in the second, with Meredith Worsley (Durham, NC) scoring, off a Becca McLain (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) assist, at the 46:54 mark. Nearly 17 minutes later, Lisa McKenzie (Inverness, Scotland) scored, off a penalty kick rebound, to give ODU the 2-0 lead. Longwood answered right back, with Ashley Gray connecting just two minutes later, to cut the lead to 2-1.
Beth Pagano (Trenton, NJ) increased the ODU lead, scoring at the 74:14 mark, off a Heather Jones (Waldorf, MD) assist. A minute later, Laura Beeman scored an unassisted goal for the Lady Monarchs. Beeman scored again nearly 10 minutes later, at the 85:01 mark of the half, off a Kim Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) assist. Three minutes later, Tina DiFerdinando (Boothwyn, PA) capped off the Lady Monarch assault, with an unassisted goal.
For the game, the Lady Monarchs had a 21-2 shot advantage and a 6-2 corner kicks edge. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Miller (Plymouth Meeting, PA) allowed only one goal in 90 minutes of play.
The Lady Monarchs return to action next Sunday, September 5, taking on UMBC at home at 1:00 PM.
