Former Lady Monarch Advances To Main Draw Of U.S. Open

Flushing Meadows, N.Y. -- Former Old Dominion University Lady Monarch, Tzipi Obziler from Israel, advanced to the main draw of the US Open tennis tournament held at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Obziler defeated Marta Domachowska from Poland 7-5, 6-4. On Tuesday, Obziler's first round opponent will be Angelique Widjaja fromIndonesia. Should Obziler advance she is likely to play the #1 seed, Justine Henen-Hardenne in the second round. Current ODU tennis director, Darryl Cummings, is serving as Obziler's coach at the US Open.

While at Old Dominion, Tzipi won the ITA National Clay Court in 1995 and became the #1 player in the country before pursuing a professional tennis career.
