Monarchs Defeat JMU, 7-6, To Sweep Series & Take Fifth Place In The CAA

HARRISONBURG, VA-- Bryan Cipolla and Kenneth Gram each knocked in two runs andDonnie Smith came on in the eighth to pick up his third straight save in theseries as ODU defeated James Madison, 7-6 Monday afternoon.

The Monarchs are now 20-24 overall and 9-9 in the CAA. In sweeping the series,ODU is now in sole possession of fifth place in the CAA.

Dana Arrowood pickedup the win, his fifth of the season. He pitched seven innings allowingonly three runs, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Evan Chipman scored an unearned run in the fourth to break a three-all tie andput ODU up for good. Bryan Cipolla knocked in Derek James and Justin Gregulawith a double in the second inning. Kenneth Gram's ground out in the secondplated Cipolla. Gram also singled home Evan Chipman in the seventh inning.

Gram led ODU with two hits, while Chipman stole three bases on the day. EveryMonarch reached base today.

With ODU leading 7-3, the Dukes mounted a rally as Mike Butia slammed his 17thhomerun of the season with Brandon Bowser aboard in the eighth inning.Butia is second in the CAA in homeruns. Donnie Smithcame on and got the next two outs. In the ninth Bowser singled home Matt Bristowto cut the lead to 7-6. With the bases loaded and two outs, Smith got Butiato fly out and end the game.

The Monarchs travel to Lynchburg, VA Tuesday to play at Liberty in a 1 p.m.contest, then to Radford on Wednesday.
