RICHMOND, VA. - Old Dominion University freshmen pitchers Andrew Bucher (Virginia Beach, Va.-Tallwood HS) , Hunter Hall (Virginia Beach, Va.-First Colonial HS), Jimmy Greene (Poquoson, Va.-Poquoson HS) and sophomore Ricky Shefka (Kinston, NC.) scattered six hits as the Monarchs defeated Richmond, 7-0 Wednesday afternoon.
Three Monarchs, Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.), Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.), and catcher Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA.) had two hits each on the day.
Strick gave ODU a 1-0 lead in the first with his fourth homerun of the season.In the third inning Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) doubled home Derek James (Terre Haute, IN.). In the eighth inning freshman C.J. Lee (Bristol, VA.) tripled home Grugula his Virginia high school teammate Tyler Belcher. In the ninth Gregula doubled home James, and Belcher doubled home Gregula.
The Spiders were led by Ben Zeskind with four hits in four trips to the plate. URhad the bases loaded in the ninth with two outs, but Shefka came in to get the final outand preserve the teams third shutout. ODU last shut out Richmond at Pitt Field onMarch 19, 1999 behind the three-hit pitching of Jim Detwiler.
The Monarchs return to action this weekend when they host the Tribe ofWilliam and Mary in a three-game CAA series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
