NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team fell to #17 Towson University in their regular season home finale, 19-15, on senior day at a sunny and warm Foreman Field. Old Dominion had eight different Lady Monarchs reach the back of the Tiger net led by the six goal effort by senior midfielder Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA).
The Lady Monarchs, who faced their seventh ranked opponent of the year, fell to 0-6 in the CAA and 3-11 overall, while the Tigers improved to 11-3 and 5-1 in the league. Towson's 11 wins gives the Tigers their best record in school history.
The Tigers overcame of 6-3 deficit midway through the first half to take a 9-7 lead into the intermission. Towson and Old Dominion traded goals in the early minutes of the first stanza as Towson sophomore Becky Trumbo opened up scoring off a free position attempt. Senior Kelly Kanara (Kennett Square, PA), making her first career start, put Old Dominion up on the board to tie the game at 1-1 with 26:38. Trumbo, who would go on to score a game-high seven goals, put Towson ahead three minutes later, but Wosczyna answered with the first of her six goals of the afternoon as the Lady Monarchs proceeded to score four answered goals. Four of the six members of the senior class scored the unanswered goals including Wosczyna and midfielders Molly Coane (Bayshore, NY) and Erin Lindsey (Aubudon, PA).
Following Lindsey's tally that gave Old Dominion a 5-2 lead with 17:10 left in the half, the Tigers went on to score six of the game's next seven goals, including a span of six unanswered, to take over the lead for good. During that span, five different Tigers found their way into the back of the Old Dominion goals including two goals by Kelly Fitzgerald. In the closing minutes, Wosczyna helped cut the Towson lead to 8-7, but the Tigers' Caitlin Marshall put one away with nine seconds remaining to give Towson the 9-7 edge at the half.
Freshman attacker Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, MD) collected the draw control and raced down the field for a goal in the opening seconds of half number two as Old Dominion cut the Tigers lead to one, 9-8, but the Tigers netted five unanswered tallies to bump their lead up to 14-8 with 17:43 remaining in the game. Three of the five answered goals came from Trumbo, the game's leading scorer. Senior Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD) poured both her goals in along with Wosczyna as the Lady Monarch continued to try and chip away at the Tiger lead with Old Dominion trailing 14-11 with 10:12 left. The Tigers, however, outscored the Lady Monarchs 5-1 over the next seven minutes to solidify their lead. Wosczyna along with freshman Colleen Carver (Catonsville, MD) and sophomore Lisa Colonna (Freeport, NY) scored in the final minutes for the final margin.
In net, goalkeeper Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made 12 stops for Old Dominion while Towson's Jessica O'Connell made 14 saves.
Defensively, Gannon and Wosczyna scooped up five groundballs, while freshman Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, MD) caused three turnovers. Caitlin Marshall collected a Tiger-high four groundballs, while O'Connell and Marshall each had two caused turnovers apiece.
The Lady Monarchs will try to return to the win column on Wednesday, April 21 when they travel to William & Mary to take on the Tribe at 7:00 p.m.
