DURHAM, NC-Duke University junior lefthander Tim Layden (19-18) pitched a complete game no-hitter as Duke defeated the Monarchs (13-20) of Old Dominion, 4-0. Layden fanned 12 and walked three.
Duke scored three runs in the fourth. Tim Layden helped out his own cause leading off with a single. He would later score on a run scoring double by Bryan Smith.Mike Miello then singled in Brian Hernandez and Smith to make it 3-0. Duke's fourthrun came in eighth when pinch runner Senterrio Landram scored on a wild pitch.
ODU had three runners reach third. In the first inning, Kieth Hahn reached onan error, but was forced out on Justin Gregula's groundout. Gregula eventually advancedto third with two outs. In the eighth Allen Strick led off with a walk, and Evan Chipmanreached on an error. Both were sacrificed over to second and third but were stranded there. The last time ODU was held hitless was on May 13, 1989 by Jim Huslig of theUniversity of Oklahoma. ODU returns to action Wednesday night when they hostThe University of Richmond at 7 p.m.
