NORFOLK, VA -- Sophomore right-hander Dana Arrowood pitched five innings of one-run baseball in relief of Justin Verlander as the Monarchs defeated Kent State 7-5. Brandon Carter led the Monarchs with two hits and four RBIs as ODU collected nine hits in the victory.

Old Dominion scored six runs in the first inning off starting pitcher Justin Laraway. The Monarchs, with four hits and a sacrifice bunt, scored six times in the first eight at-bats. Brandon Carter cleared the bases with a two-out double off the right-center field wall. The Monarchs added a single run in the third inning when Carter singled in Derek James.

Golden Flashes catcher Kurt Eichorn was three-for-five with two runs scored for Kent State. Kent State relievers combined for 8 1/3 innings of one-run baseball to keep the Golden Flashes in the game. The Monarchs and Golden Flashes play the second game of the three game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
