NORFOLK, VA -- After rain swept through the Hampton Roads area pushing today's game into the evening, the Princeton Tigers (2-0) took the second game of the three game series with the Old Dominion baseball team (6-8), 6-1. Righthander James Burok (Archbald, PA) pitched a complete game, but took the loss after scattering nine Tiger hits and allowing six runs.
The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh as Princeton scored four runs on three hits and a Monarch error. Tiger outfielder Andrew Salini opening the inning with a single through the leftside of the field and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Catcher Zack Wendkos then found the gap in right-center to send Salini in for an RBI double. Two plays later, Wendkos reached home on a fielder's choice by leftfielder Adam Balkan which was followed by a BJ Szymanksi RBI groundout to second base.
The Monarchs added in their lone run of the night in the bottom of the eighth. Designated hitter Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA) opened the inning with single and reached second on a steal. Third baseman Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD) grounded out to short to advance Arrowood to third, who then scored on a wild pitch by Tiger pitcher Eric Walz.
The Tigers added in two more insurance runs in the ninth. Szymanksi hit his second homerun of the series over the right field wall.
Arrowood finished the night 3-for-4 with a run scored. The Tigers allowed just four Monarch hits.
Princeton's Szymanski went 2-for-5 with a run and three runs batted in, while Balkan and Wendkos ended with a run scored and an RBI.
Burok pitched all nine innings allowing six runs, five earned, and striking out six, as he fell to 0-4 on the year. Princeton starter Erik Stiller earned his first win of the year tossing five innings allowing just one hit and striking out six Monarch batters. Walz pitched four inning for relief for Princeton, allowing three hits and giving up the lone Old Dominion run along with two strikeouts.
The Monarchs run to action tomorrow when they try to take the third and final game of the series from the Tigers at 1:00 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
