NORFOLK, VA-Jeff Frazier's sacrifice fly plated Graig Badger in the top of the tenth to give the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion Friday evening. Rutgers is 2-2, ODU is 4-4. All three runs scored were unearned.
Rutgers broke up the scoreless pitchers duel between ODU's pre-season All-American Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA.) and Jack Egbert in the sixth inning. Withtwo outs Jeff Frazier reached on a two-base error, then scored on Rich Canuso's single.That was Rutgers first hit of the day off Verlander.
ODU tied the game in the bottom of the ninth as Derek James reached on anError. Dana Arrowood(Woodbridge, VA.) walked and Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) loaded the bases on an infield hit. Steven Harris (Va.Beach, VA.)sacrifice fly scored James (Terre Haute, IN.) to tie the game at one.
In the top of the tenth, Badger and Jeff Grouse reached on back-to-back Monarch errors to put runners on the corners. Frazier then knocked in Badger with a fly to rightfield.
Verlander pitched seven innings allowing one unearned run on two hits and eightstrikeouts. Jack Egbert of Rutgers pitched nine innings allowing one unearned run onfour hits and striking out six. Matt Pustay picked up the save in the bottom of the tenth. The two teams play game two of the three-game weekend series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
