NORFOLK, VA -- Sophomore Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA) singled to left with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Old Dominion baseball team (4-3) to a 6-5 victory over George Washington (1-4) Wednesday afternoon at the Bub Metheny Baseball Complex.
The Monarchs were down by two runs entering the ninth, trailing 5-4. Centerfielder Keith Hahn (Valley Stream, NY) singled to short with one out to start the rally and advanced to third after shortstop Brandon Carter (Sacramento, CA) followed with a base hit to right center. Old Dominion proceeded to tie the game up as Hanh reached ome after the ball passed by the Colonial's catcher. Two batters later, Arrowood, who was 1-for-4 for the game going into his final at-bat, smacked the ball into the leftfield corner to send home Carter for the game winning run.
George Washington struck early in the game taking a 1-0 lead in the first with Anthony Raglani singling to right scoring centerfielder Matt Owns from second base. However the Monarchs would not be the hole long, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second with a freshman Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY) single up the middle allowing Arrowood home.
The Colonials struck back in the top of the fourth as Brad Rosenblat's base hit to second advanced, followed by a Anthony Smith sacrifice fly to center allowed two George Washington runs.
The Monarchs put a run up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning followed by two in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Sophomore outfielder Steven Harris (Va. Beach, VA), sitting on second base, stole third and then reached home following a throwing error by the Colonials' catcher in the fourth, while in the fifth, senior Derek James' (Terre Haute, IN) two-run homer to right in the fifth gave Old Dominion the lead.
The Colonials tie the game up once more in the seventh as Tom Shanley's sacrifice fly to left with the bases loaded and one out scored Smith. George Washington proceeded to take the lead in the top of the ninth with an Owen's solo, two-out homer to right forcing Old Dominion to return to the plate for the bottom of the ninth.
James finished the afternoon 2-for-4with a hit and two RBI's, while Arrowood was 2-for-5 with a run and a run batted in. Smith picked up the win for the Monarchs, improving to 1-0 on the season.
For the Colonials, Owens went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Lutz earned the loss for George Washington, tossing 2.2 innings allowing five hits and two runs.
