NORFOLK, VA-Navy defeated Old Dominion, 4-2 Saturday afternoonbehind the pitching of Ryan Hefner, Burgess Nichols, and Joe Koessler. Navy isnow 1-3, and ODU is 1-1.

All four of the Midshipmen runs were unearned. With the bases loaded inthe fifth Ryan McGinn, Scott Pastell, Pete Curnow scored with two outs when RickAmos' fly ball was dropped.

The Monarchs answered in the bottom of the fifth as junior centerfielderEvan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.) singled home Brian Cipolla (Plainview, NY.)and Kenneth Gram (Tempe, AZ.). Eric Mesa (Miami, FL.) led the Monarchs withtwo hits.

Navy's final run came on an infield error as Ryan McGinn scored withtwo outs in the top of the ninth. ODU threatened in the ninth as Cipolla led off witha walk and Mesa singled with two outs, but Koessler retired Chipman on a fly ball tocenter.

James Burok (Archbald, PA.) suffered his first loss of the season with three strikeouts, two walks and six hits. Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.) fanned four batters in relief and allowed one unearned run. The two teams will play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
