NORFOLK, VA - The Old Dominion field hockey team snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 2-2 on the year as they defeated Stanford (2-2), 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Foreman Field. The Lady Monarchs dominated the offense outshooting the Cardinal 38-5 and holding a 20-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Five different Lady Monarchs reached the back of the net in the victory led by sophomore Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, PA) with one goal and an assist.

Sophomore Chilly Banuelos (Escondido, CA) started the Lady Monarchs scoring barrage at the 21:03 mark on an unassisted tally. Senior Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA) followed by capitalizing on one of 14 Old Dominion first-half penalty corners with 12:18 left in the half. Senior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) added in her second game-winner of the season, also taking advantage of a penalty corner with just under 10 minutes remaining, giving the Lady Monarchs a 3-0 edge. Engle rounded out the Lady Monarch scoring of the half on a tip-in from rookie Dana Sensenig (Denver, PA) in the closing minutes of the first stanza to give Old Dominion a 4-0 edge at the half.

The Lady Monarch defense did not allow a single Stanford shot and only one Cardinal penalty corner in the first half of play.

Stanford managed five shots in the second half and got by Lady Monarch netminder Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) twice on penalty corners. Lyndsay Erickson got the Cardinal onto the scoreboard at the 21:50 mark of the second half to break Old Dominion's potential shutout. Noor Dawood added in Stanford's second goal with 1:48 remaining on the game on a tip-in from the left side of the net.

Freshman Caroline Nichols (Va. Beach, VA) added in the Lady Monarchs' only goal of the second half, the first of her career, on a lift behind Stanford keeper Emily Zander.

Walker made three saves in net for Old Dominion, while Zander, who was under constant pressure from the Lady Monarch offense all afternoon made 24 stops for the Cardinal.

The Lady Monarchs return to action next weekend as they open up CAA action. Old Dominion hosts William & Mary in its conference opener on Saturday, September 13th and will play Connecticut on Sunday, September 14th. Both games begin at 1:00 p.m. at Foreman Field and admission to the game is free.

UPCOMING NOTES: The first STX/NFHCA Coaches' Poll will be released on Tuesday, September 9th. Stanford will return to Foreman Field on Saturday, September 13th to play Connecticut at 11:00 a.m. before the Lady Monarchs' CAA opener against the Tribe.
