DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Gracie Sorbello scored off a penalty corner with just 1:33 remaining in the game to give the Blue Devils a 3-2 win over Old Dominion on Sunday at Williams Field. Katie Grant and Johanna Bischof were awarded assists on the play as Duke topped the Monarchs for just the second time in school history. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 5-1 on the year, while No. 5 Old Dominion falls to 4-4.
The Monarchs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Angie Loy assisted on an Anna Rogers goal just 2:19 into the contest. Old Dominion carried the lead into halftime despite 11 shots and 14 penalty corners by the Blue Devils.
Duke knotted the score at 1-1 just 35 seconds into the second half as junior Chrissie Murphy redirected a crossing pass from Johanna Bischof into goal. The goal was Murphy's sixth of the season, matching her career-high for goals in a season.
Bischof then gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead at the 54:48 mark with her fourth goal of the season. Old Dominion responded with just under five minutes remaining in the contest as Katie Claxton scored an unassisted goal to tie the score at 2-2.
Again it was Bischof who created the scoring opportunity for the Blue Devils. The junior midfielder knocked down a bounding ball near midfield and worked her way into the scoring area where Duke was awarded a penalty corner after the ball struck the foot of an Old Dominion player.
On the penalty corner, Grant pushed out to Bischof, who stopped the ball and slid it to Sorbello for the game-winning goal. It was Sorbello's second game-winning goal of the season and the sixth in her career.
Bischof finished the day with one goal and two assists, giving her a team-high nine assists and 17 points. She now ranks seventh in the Duke record books with 74 career points. Bischof also ranks eighth in career goals (25) and ninth in career assists (24).
The Blue Devils, ranked fourth in the latest NFHCA poll, pressured Old Dominion throughout the game taking 19 shots on goal, while also registering 19 penalty corners. ODU goalie Tina Walker collected 11 saves, while Christy Morgan stopped three shots for Duke.
The last Blue Devil win over the Monarchs, who now hold a 13-2 advantage all-time, was a 3-2 decision during the 1999 season.
