NORFOLK, VA - Old Dominion and the University of Delaware will square off in the 2003 CAA Field Hockey championships game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Foreman Field after the Lady Monarchs defeated Virginia Commonwealth 7-2 and the Fightin' Blue Hens used overtime to down William & Mary, 2-1, in Saturday's semifinals.
In the first semifinal, the top seeded the Lady Monarchs avenged their earlier loss to the fourth seeded Rams from the regular season that had ended Old Dominion's 58 game CAA win streak. The Lady Monarchs managed to overcome an early 0-2 deficit to score seven unanswered goals to advance to their eight straight conference final.
Virginia Commonwealth controlled the game early taking a 2-0 lead less than eight minutes into the contest. Sophomore forward Amy Gallivan reached the back of the Old Dominion net first just over five minutes into the contest for the early 1-0 lead followed by a senior midfielder Jennifer Howard tally off a penalty corner two and half minutes later.
The tempo quickly turned into Old Dominion's favor as the Lady Monarchs rattled off seven unanswered goals led by a hat trick by CAA Player of the Year Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) and two nets by redshirt freshman Jenna McLane (Stowe, VT). The Old Dominion defense clamped down on Rams, not allowing Virginia Commonwealth a single shot on net in the second half of play.
The Lady Monarchs outshot Virginia Commonwealth, 20-4, and outcornered the Rams, 13-4.
Senior Ram keeper Abby Stiles made eight saves while Old Dominion's Tina Walker made two stops in net for the Lady Monarchs.
In the day's second semifinal, Delaware's Jessica Breault tipped in Erica LaBar's shot 1:18 into the second overtime to lift the third seeded Fightin' Blue Hens to an upset over second seeded William & Mary.
After a scoreless first half, the Tribe scored less than a minute into the second stanza as senior forward Jordan Steele put away her team leading 13th goal of the season. However, with time running down and William & Mary clinging onto a 1-0 lead, Blue Hen rookie Katie Evans evened the score with just 41 seconds remaining in regulation.
Neither team managed to tally a goal in the first overtime session. Delaware managed three shots on the Tribe net and kept William & Mary on defense throughout most of the period.
In the second and final overtime, LaBar, a junior forward, forced a shot across the Tribe cage, as Breault came running in from the left side of the circle to tip in the game-winner and send Delaware to its first ever CAA Field Hockey Tournament final appearance.
The Blue Hens outshot William & Mary 11-6, not allowing the Tribe a single shot on net in either overtime. Delaware also had a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners.
In net, the Tribe's senior Stacey Gaenzle posted seven saves while Delaware's freshman Megan Allen stopped two shots on net.
Tomorrow's championship game begins at 1:00 p.m. with the winner receiving the CAA's automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Tournament. Old Dominion has captured the last seven straight CAA titles and 12 of the last 13. Delaware has appeared in the post-season the last eight seasons and made an appearance in the America East Finals in 2001. In their first season in the CAA last year, the Blue Hens fell to William & Mary, 1-4, in the semifinals.
