NORFOLK, VA - The Old Dominion men's soccer team defeated N.C. State Saturday night 6-3, in the first round of the NCAA Men's College Cup. The Monarchs will next face #2-seed Maryland in College Park, MD Wednesday, November 26. ODU was led in scoring by Kevin McMenamim (West Springfield, VA) who scored two goals. The Monarchs improve to 15-3-1 for the season, while N.C. State falls to 9-9-2.

Kyle Hartley (Virginia Beach, VA) scored in the 23 minute mark of the game, off an Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) assist, to put ODU put 1-0. Kevin McMenamin scored a second goal in the 41 minute mark, off a Belus Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) assist to extend the Monarch lead going into the half, 2-0. In the second half, Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) scored off another Attila Vendegh assist to put ODU up 3-0. Less than 20 seconds later, Ross Mackenzie (Richmond, VA) netted an unassisted goal to give the Monarchs a 4-0 advantage.

N.C. State scored next, with Frederico Peria connecting on a penalty kick at the 64 minute mark, but the Monarchs bounced back half a minute later when Attila Vendegh scored a goal, off a Gianni Cimini (Ontario, Canada) assist. McMenamin scored his second goal of the night off a Kevon Harris assist at the 68 minute mark. N.C. State connected on two late goals-both coming in the last two minutes-with John Queeley and Hiroki Kawase scoring to bring the game to an end, with ODU on top 6-3.

This marks the second straight year the Monarchs have won in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Last year, ODU defeated Richmond 3-0. ODU remains undefeated at home this season.

The Monarchs travel to play another Atlantic Coast Conference team Wednesday, travelling to College Park, MD. ODU is 4-7-1 all-time against the Terrapins, last losing 2-0 in 1996 in Norfolk.
