WILLIAMSBURG, VA - Old Dominion guard ShareeseGrant (Va. Beach, VA) led all scorers with 22 points while three others reacheddouble figures as the Lady Monarchs shot 53% from the field and 64%from three point range as Old Dominion defeated William and Mary75-58 this evening at William and Mary Hall. The Lady Monarchs moveto 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the CAA, while the Tribe falls in their season and conference opener.
William and Mary freshman guard Kyle DeHaven (led the Tribe with 20 points, and shared the game high in reboundswith teammate and fellow freshman Kyra Kaylor (Pittsburgh, PA) witheight, and also record five steals and four assists. She scored theTribe's first 13 points as she made her first four shots from thefield, and finished 7-11 shooting from the floor.
The game began with Old Dominion running out to a 6-0 lead onconsecutive three-pointers from senior Myriah Spence (Espanola, NM), but DeHaven answeredwith five consecutive points to close the lead to one. After theTribe tied the game at 11 on a layup by DeHaven, ODU took the leadon a Grant jumper. The Lady Monarchs ran out to its biggest lead ofthe half, 10 points, at 39-29 with 38 seconds left, but William & Maryended the half on a 4-0 run on a layup by DeHaven and a jumper bySchiel to trim the lead to six at the half, 39-33.
The Tribe stormed out of the gate to open the second half, asit scored six unanswered points to tie the game at 39 on a ChristinGethers jumper. ODU quickly regained the lead byscoring four quick points to lead 43-39 on a Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) layup, butthe Tribe battled back again with a 4-0 run, capped off by a Gethersjumper off of a DeHaven offensive rebound, to again tie the game at43, with 16:09 left.
Old Dominion took the lead for good on a Coker free throw with14:48 left, and the Lady Monarchs held the Tribe scoreless for thenext 3:59, as they ran up an 12-point lead at 55-43.
The Lady Monarchs upped its lead to as much as 17 at 66-49, and William & Mary went ona 7-0 run to get within 10 points, as Schiel connected fromthree-point range, followed by free throws from DeHaven andMcCaffrey, and capped off by a Gethers putback with exactly fourminutes remaining, but that was as close as the Tribe would get, asOld Dominion would go on to win, by 17, 75-58.
The Lady Monarchs held the advantage in rebounds, as itoutrebounded the Tribe 28-27 as sophomore Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, FL) and Spence each had sixboards. The Tribe shot 45% from the floor, and 23% from three-pointrange.
Old Dominion returns to action in its home opener on Tuesday, November 25th against #8/9 Penn State. The 2002-03 CAA Championship team will receive their championship rings and the new CAA and NCAA banner will be spotlighted prior to the 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
