Box Score

NORFOLK, VA -- The fourth ranked Tar Heels completed the season sweep of the home-and-home series against the Lady Monarch field hockey team by scoring three unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 4-2 victory over #12 Old Dominion.

The Lady Monarchs, in the midst of a five-game losing streak, fall to 10-9 overall. The nine losses are the most since the 1995 season when Old Dominion finished the year 16-9. North Carolina, who back in September took the first game in the series with a 4-0 shutout in Chapel Hill, improved to 15-4 overall.

The game was evenly matched in the first half with each team posting a goal before halftime. The Tar Heels struck first at 19:21 as junior midfielder Laura Douglas put away the first of her two goals on the afternoon. However just over a minute later, Lady Monarch leading scorer, senior midfielder Angie Loy (Loysville, PA), reached the back of the Tar Heel cage to tie the score at 1-1. Loy's goal, her 17th of the year, moved her into a tie for seventh with Jill Fisher (1985-88) in career goals at Old Dominion with 70 career tallies.

Old Dominion struck again seven minutes into the second half to take a 2-1 lead. After the Lady Monarchs failed to score on a penalty corner opportunity, Loy controlled the ball away from the North Carolina defense to feed it to sophomore midfielder Chilly Banuelos (Escondido, CA) to give the Lady Monarchs its only lead of the game.

The Lady Monarch defense held North Carolina away from the cage until 19:11 remaining in the game as the Tar Heels went on to score three unanswered goals. Sophomore forward Karen Mann tied the game at 2-2 as she collected her own rebound off Old Dominion keeper Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA). With 16:00 left, junior forward Kerry Falgowki passed the ball from the top the circle to Douglas for her second tally of the game and the eventual game-winner. Rookie midfielder Brooke Miller then added in an insurance goal for North Carolina with just over seven minutes remaining on a breakaway.

The Lady Monarchs were outshot, 14-6. The Tar Heel defense kept Old Dominion to just three shots in the second half as North Carolina launched eight shots of its own in the second stanza. Both squads had five penalty corners.

Senior Tina Walker provided Old Dominion with six saves in net. The Tar Heel's Amy Tran posted three saves.

Old Dominion closes out the regular season on Sunday, November 2, when they host #8 Princeton at 1:00 p.m. The Lady Monarch seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game.

CAA TOURNAMENT UPDATE:

The Delaware Blue Hens locked up the No. 3 seed in the 2003 CAA Field Hockey Tournament with a 2-0 win over Towson on Friday night. Delaware's win solidifies the tournament pairings for next weekend's CAA Field Hockey Tournament at Old Dominion's Foreman Field.

Virginia Commonwealth visits James Madison on Sunday, and can still tie the Blue Hens in the CAA regular season standings with a win over the Dukes, however Delaware holds the tie-breaker over VCU based on its 1-0 win over the Rams on Oct. 5.

Old Dominion and William & Mary finished the CAA regular season with identical 6-1 conference records, however the Lady Monarchs received the top seed and will host the tournament based on their 3-0 win over William & Mary on Sept. 13. The tournament will feature two semi-final games on Saturday, Nov. 7, followed by the 2003 CAA Field Hockey Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 8.

The Lady Monarchs will face the No. 4 seed VCU in the tournament's first game at 12 p.m. on Nov. 7. The two teams met on Oct. 26, with VCU posting a 5-4 win that snapped ODU's 58-game CAA winning streak. Senior Jennifer Howard and junior Casey Smith each scored a pair of goals to lead the Rams to their first-ever win over ODU. The 12th-ranked Lady Monarchs have a non-conference home game remaining with #8 Princeton on Sunday.

No. 2 seed William & Mary will face Delaware at 2:30 p.m. in the tournament's second game on Nov. 7. The 14th-ranked Tribe knocked off JMU 8-3 last Sunday to match its best-ever conference regular season finish at 6-1, which was also set last season. Seniors Kelli Duggan and Kelly McQuade each recorded a hat trick in the victory. William & Mary defeated 18th-ranked Delaware 2-1 on Oct. 10.

The championship game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1:00 p.m. Admission to all tournament games is free.
