NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion University field hockey team took home its eighth straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title as they shutout the University of Delaware, 5-0, in the championship game of the CAA Tournament at Foreman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The top seeded Lady Monarchs (13-9) controlled much of the tempo throughout the game keeping the third seeded Fightin' Blue Hens (14-7) to just two shots and two penalty corners all in the first half of play.

Redshirt freshman Darcy Pinchbeck (Suffolk, VA) sent home the first goal of the game and the eventual game-winner 13 minutes into the contest, scooping up a rebound fired from teammate Jenna McLane (Stove, VT). Rookie Dana Sensenig (Denver, PA) added the Lady Monarchs' second goal of the afternoon moments before the half, giving Old Dominion a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.

Delaware's Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE) and Katie Evans (Newtown Square, PA) fired off shots on the Old Dominion net in the opening stanza, but they would be the only two shots the Blue Hens would manage in the game.

Two goals by sophomore midfielder Chilly Banuelos (Escondido, CA) and a tally by CAA Player of the Year Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) rounded out the Lady Monarch scoring in the second half.

In net, Delaware's freshman Megan Allen (Va. Beach, VA) posted seven saves, while Old Dominion's senior Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) needed to make just one stop in the cage. The Lady Monarchs outshot Delaware 14-2 and outcornered the Blue Hens, 8-2.

Old Dominion senior midfielder Angie Loy was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Also representing Old Dominion on the All-Tournament team were sophomore midfielder Chilly Banuelos, redshirt freshman forward Jenna McLane, freshman midfielder Dana Sensenig, and senior defender Melissa Leonetti (Erdenhiem, PA).

Delaware's All-Tournament selections included senior midfielder Jessi Balmer (Telford, PA), rookie forward Amanda Warrington (Lewes, DE), and junior forward Leah Geib (Schwenksville, PA).

Also on the CAA All-Tournament team were Jennifer Howard (Va. Beach, VA) and Casey Smith (Va. Beach, VA) of Virginia Commonwealth and Anna Davis (Richmond, VA) and Jordan Steele (Williamsburg, VA) of William & Mary.

Old Dominion, who has won 13 of the CAA's 14 field hockey championships, receives the conference's automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Tournament. The nine-time national champions will learn their opponent on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. Delaware and William & Mary, nationally ranked throughout most of the 2003 season, will also learn on Tuesday night if they receive an at-large bid to the tournament. Last year, three teams from the CAA were represented in the 16-team tournament, Old Dominion, James Madison, and William & Mary.
