PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Drexel Dragons may have been the first Old Dominion CAA opponent to get through the pipes this season, but it was not enough as the seventh ranked Lady Monarch field hockey team emerged with a 3-1 victory over the Dragons on Sunday afternoon at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field. Old Dominion wins its fourth straight game and 56th consecutive CAA contest as they improve to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in CAA competition on the year, while Drexel falls to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Although the Lady Monarchs only outshot Drexel 6-4 in the opening half, Old Dominion leadingscorer Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) put her team up by two goals by midway through the first stanza. Freshman Anna Rogers (New Bloomfield, PA) found Loy for the first goal at the 24:30 mark followed by freshman Katie Claxton (Va. Beach, VA) finding Loy for the eventual game-winner with 11:42 on the clock. Drexel rookie Cassandra Prentiss broke the Lady Monarchs shutout streak against the CAA after collecting a rebound with 5:20 left until the half. Up until that point, Old Dominion was outscoring its conference opponents, 12-0.
Old Dominion dominated the second half of play, outshooting the Dragons 12-1. The Lady Monarchs found the back of the net one more time in the game when after six straight corners, freshman Jenna McLane (Stowe, VT), on the assist by Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA), scored ODU's third goal with 9:50 remaining in the game.
Drexel's Katie Dougherty tallied 11 saves, while Old Dominion's Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) stopped three shots on net.
The Lady Monarchs return to action next weekend in a pair of CAA contests. Old Dominion welcomes both Towson and Delaware to Forman Field for the first time in school history. The Lady Monarchs take on the Tigers on Friday, October 10th at 6:00 p.m. and the Fightin' Blue Hens on Sunday, October 12th at 1:00 p.m. Admission to both games are free.
