ABOUT THE OPPONENT:

North Carolina: The North Carolina field hockey team shut out Old Dominion 4-0 backon September 20th at FrancisE. Henry Stadium.. Carey Fetting-Smith, a junior from Baltimore, scored twice,both times on penalty corners. Her goals were on straight shots, assisted byjunior Katy Potter on the push-in and junior Laura Douglas on the stick stop.Junior Kelsey Keeran scored an unassisted goal late in the first half, thenassisted on the team's fourth goal, by freshman Laree Beans early in the secondhalf. ODU had nine corners to seven byUNC. The Lady Monarchs were averaging three goals per game coming intoSaturday's contest, but were shut out for the first time since September of2002, when Carolina won 2-0 in last year's game at Henry Stadium. Junior forward Katty Potter leads her squadin scoring with 28 points on eight goals and 12 assists. Junior defender Carey Fetting-Smith, whoscored two of UNC's goals including the game-winner in her last match-up withOld Dominion, checks in as the second leading scorer with eight goals and fourassists for 20 points. Freshmanmidfielder Laree Beans, who scored the final goal in the Tar Heel's shutout inSeptember, has collected 19 points off of seven points and five assists. Ingoal, sophomore Katy Tran is holding a 1.04 goals against average.

Princeton: Last time against the Tigers, Old Dominion suffered a 2-1 loss. Princeton's senior Cory Picketts scored anearly goal six minutes into the contest to give the Tigers' a lead it wouldn'trelinquish, while Princeton netmminder Allison Nemeth had a season-best 12saves, including six in the final 1:20 of the first half. Old Dominion,had fivepenalty corners in that time, including two after the clock had run out, butNemeth stopped five shots from and one from to help preserve a 2-1 halftimelead. Princetoncontrolled much of the first half before the late Monarch push in the finalminutes, then used four saves from Nemeth and a missed penalty stroke from Loywith just under 14 minutes left to hold on for the win. Picketts' goal gave Princeton a 1-0 lead6:18 into the game. The Tigers drew a penalty corner, where Lizzie Black fakeda drive and instead fed Picketts near the left of the cage for a redirectionpast Old Dominion goalie (Suffolk, VA). The Tigers then took a2-0 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the first half thank to someterrific individual effort from junior Natalie Martirosian. The junior took apass from Maren Ford and worked her way around an ODU defender near the top ofthe circle, finally striking a ball through Walker's legs from several yardsaway. Before their late first-halfrush that ended without a goal, the Lady Monarchs took advantage of apenalty-corner situation to cut the Princeton lead to 2-1 with 3:28 left in thehalf. MelissaLeonetti (Erdenheim, PA) stopped JanelleEngle's (Mt. Joy, PA) corner and fed the ball to Maddox, who drove ashot past Nemeth. Entering this weekend, the Tigers are 11-3 overall and aperfect 6-0 in Ivy League play. Juniorattacker Lizzie Black leads Princeton with 18 points on six goals and sixassists, while three Tigers are tied for second in scoring. Senior midfielder Claire Miller, sophomoreattack Maren Ford, and junior attack Natalie Martirosian each have 14points. Miller and Ford have eachcollected six goals and two assists while Martirosian has registered four goalsand six assists. In net, Allison Nemethwill continue to be the Lady Monarchs' nemesis. Nemeth is posting an .820 save percentage and a 0.99 goalsagainst average, good enough for fifth in the country.

SCHOLARSHIP GAME REMINDER:

Justa reminder that the annual Field Hockey Scholarship Game will take place thisweekend on November 1st against North Carolina. The $5.00 admission will go towards the ODUIntercollegiate Foundation for field hockey scholarships.

CAA STREAK:

TheLady Monarchs CAA win streak was snapped last weekend with a 5-4 loss toVirginia Commonwealth. Enter lastSunday's match-up with the Rams, the Lady Monarchs had not lost a CAA contestsince a 1-2 loss to James Madison in the championship game of the 1995 CAATournament. The streak consisted of 44regular season games and 14 CAA Tournament games for a grand total of 58 consecutiveconference wins during a seven year span.

COMING TO A FIELD NEAR YOU:

Williamand Mary and Old Dominion both finished the CAA regular season with a 6-1record, but the Lady Monarchs will take the top seed and bring the CAATournament home to Norfolk once again.Based on the tie break rules, since Old Dominion defeated the Tribe 3-0back on September 13th, the Lady Monarchs were awarded the top spotin the tournament. Old Dominion has won12 CAA Championships in all since joining the league in 1991, including thelast seven titles.

LONG TIME RIVALS:

OldDominion has faced the North Carolina Tar Heels more times than any otheropponent in history. Saturday's meetingwill be the 55th meeting between the two schools whose rivalry datesback to the 1978 season.

HOME AND HOME:

OldDominion will be looking to avenge earlier losses to both North Carolina andPrinceton this weekend. Maryland, NorthCarolina, and Princeton have enjoyed home and home series in recent years. The Maryland series has enjoyed a home andaway game since 1999, while the North Carolina series dates back to 1993 andthe Princeton series began last season.

NCAA HISTORY:

North Carolina has had a long rivalry with OldDominion in the post-season. NorthCarolina and the Lady Monarchs have faced each other in NCAA play 10 timessince NCAA Tournament play began in 1981.Their most recent encounter in the post-season was during ODU's 2000championship run as the Lady Monarchs handed the Tar Heels a 3-1 loss tocollect their ninth national title.Princeton and the Lady Monarchs have had more of a recent history in theNCAA against one another. The Tigersdashed ODU's hopes of returning to the Final Four in 2001 with a 2-1 victory ontheir home turf in the second round. In1998, the Lady Monarchs brought home their eighth national title with a 3-2victory over the Ivy League opponents.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

Angie Loy (September 15th):

Loy helped lead the Lady Monarchs to a pair of winover nationally ranked opponents, which included a 3-0 shutout in the CAAopening win over William & Mary and a 4-2 victory over #10 Connecticut. Loytotaled three goals and two assists on the week. She had a hand in all three ofthe Lady Monarchs goals against the Tribe, scoring two and assisting on theother. Defensively, Loy helped Old Dominion to their first shutout of the 2003season. Again the 10th-ranked Huskies, Loy registered a goal and assist.

Anna Rogers (September 26th):

Rogers piled up nine points on the weekend on four goalsand two assists on two games. Shetallied two goals, including the game-winner, and had an assist in leading OldDominion to its 4-1 victory over the 12th ranked Virginia Cavaliersand also scored a pair of goals in the Lady Monarchs' second shutout win of theyear, a 5-0 win over the James Madison Dukes. In eight games before theweekend, Rogers had just one goal on the season.

ANGIELOY (October 13th):

Loyadded to her league-leading point total collecting seven points in two LadyMonarchs' victories. Loy was one of nine different goal scorers in ODU's 11-0victory over Towson and added a goal and three assists in the Lady Monarchs'thrilling 6-5 overtime win over #11 Delaware. Loy found CAA Rookie of the Week in the first extra session forthe game-winning assist that extended ODU's CAA winning streak to 58 games.

RACHELDAUBERT (October 13th):

Daubert knocked in thegame-winning goal with 12.9 seconds remaining in the first overtime period inthe Lady Monarchs' 6-5 overtime win over #11 Delaware. Daubert's goal stretchedOld Dominion's winning streak to six games and extended its CAA win streak to58 games. In the Lady Monarchs' 11-0 win over Towson, Daubert scored two goals,the first two of her collegiate career, and was one of nine different LadyMonarchs to score in the game.
