An Olympian and All-American, Cheryl Van Kuren was an outstanding field hockey playerat Old Dominion from 1982-85.

She is Old Dominion's second all-time career assist leader with 61. Van Kuren helpedanchor the Lady Monarchs as they ammassed an 82-9 record with three NCAA championshipsand one runners-up finish.

Van Kuren was a two-time All-American selection and was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament team in 1985. In addition to the 61 assists, she scored 18 goals and compiled 79career points which ranks her fifth on Old Dominion's all-time point list.

During the 1984 season she was a member of the 23-0 team which outscored their opponents127-10, and outshot them 625-135. Cheryl assisted on 37 goals and set an Old Dominion andNCAA Tournament record with six assists in one game against Virginia on Nov. 11, 1984.

As a senior, Van Kuren was a first team All-American selection and NCAA All-Tournament pick. As the Lady Monarchs co-captain she was named Female Athlete-of-the-Year by the ODU Alumni Association in 1985. She also lettered in lacrosse.

Van Kuren competed on the national and international level in field hockey as an undergraduate.She participated in the Olympic Sports Festivals, on the U.S. National team and in 1988 shecompeted in the summer Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea for the United States.

The Coopersburg, Pa., native graduated with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine and earneda Master's degree in exercise science and wellness. She also served as an intern at the Arizona Heart Institute.
