RICHMOND, VA - The Virginia Commonwealth Rams stunned the ninth ranked Old Dominion field hockey team with a 5-4 victory at Cary Street Field, ending the Lady Monarchs' 58 game CAA win streak which had begun in 1996.
Old Dominion, which had not lost to a league foe since a 2-1 defeat to James Madison in the championship game of the 1995 CAA tournament, fell to 10-8 overall and 6-1 in the conference. VCU, who improved to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the CAA recorded its first-ever victory over the Monarchs since adopting field hockey as a varsity sport.
VCU senior Jennifer Howard opened the scoring when she blasted home a shot off a direct corner with under six minutes elapsed into the contest. The Monarchs countered less than a minute later when sophomore Chilly Banuelos (Escondido, CA) tapped in a loose ball in front of the Ram goal to tie the game at 1-1.
ODU took its first lead of the afternoon with 19:14 remaining in the first half when freshman Jenna McLane (Stowe, VT) beat VCU senior netminder Abby Stiles on a one-on-one situation after receiving a pass from senior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA), but VCU regained the advantage with two goals within a two-minute span. After junior Casey Smith knocked home a rebound of senior Emily Smith's shot attempt with 16:21 left before intermission to knot the contest at 2-2, sophomore Amy Gallivan slipped a shot past Monarchs' netminder Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) in the 21st minute to put the Rams back ahead.
Howard gave VCU a two-goal cushion at the half when she dribbled through the ODU defense and fired her 15th tally of the season with just over six minutes remaining before the break. The Rams then took a 5-2 lead when Smith connected off a cross from senior Nicole Sullivan midway through the second half.
The Monarchs ended their scoring drought when Loy converted a penalty stroke with 11:08 left to play, then cut their deficit to 5-4 when Loy wristed a rebound off her initial shot past Stiles with just over nine minutes remaining in regulation. ODU kept up the offensive pressure in the game's final stages, but Stiles and the VCU backfield held off the Monarchs' attack.
Old Dominion outshot the Rams 26-13 and outcornered VCU 9-5. Walker made five saves in net for the Lady Monarchs while Stiles managed to stop 10 ODU shots on net.
The Lady Monarchs return to action next weekend in rematches against North Carolina and Princeton. The Saturday, November 1st match-up against North Carolina will be the annual scholarship game with the $5.00 admission to benefit field hockey scholarships at the university. Additionally, the Sunday, November 2nd match-up versus Princeton will be the regular season finale and ODU will honor the Lady Monarch seniors prior to the start of the game. Both games are slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
