COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The seventh ranked Old Dominion field hockey team rallied late in the second half despite a 3-0 deficit to pull within one in the final minutes of the game, but the fourth ranked Maryland Terrapins managed to keep the lead for the 3-2 victory.
The loss ends ODU's six-game win streak and drops the Lady Monarchs to 10-5 overall on the season. Maryland improves to 13-2 on the year.
The Terps' Anja Boettcher scored her second goal of the game in the 52nd minute of play giving Maryland what looked to be a commanding 3-0 lead. However, within six minutes, the Lady Monarchs got onto the scoreboard as freshman Dana Sensenig (Denver, PA) collected her own rebound and put one away. Moments later, in the 61st minute of action, Old Dominion leading scorer Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) managed to weave through the Terp defense to send home her 14th goal of the season and pull Old Dominion within one, 3-2. However, the Maryland defense held in the closing moments to preserve the victory and take the home-and-home series of 2003.
Lady Monarch netminder Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) made two saves in the cage for Old Dominion, while Maryland's Christina Restivo stopped five Lady Monarch shots on net.
The Terps edged Old Dominion slightly in the shots and penalty corner department. Maryland outshot the Lady Monarchs, 9-8, and outcornered them, 5-4.
The Lady Monarchs return to action tomorrow, Sunday, October 19th when they face the #11 Princeton Tigers at 1:00 p.m. in New Jersey.
