HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The seventh ranked Old Dominion women's field hockey team won its third straight game and blanked its third Colonial Athletic Association rival by defeating the Hofstra Pride, 2-0, at James M. Shuart Stadium on Long Island. Senior midfielder Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) tallied both goals in the Lady Monarch victory.
The Lady Monarchs improve to 7-4 overall, while the Pride drop their second straight game after opening the season with eight consecutive wins, falling to 8-2 overall. The game also marked Hofstra's CAA opener as they fall to 0-1 in CAA action. Old Dominion wins its 55th straight CAA contest and advances to 3-0 in league play.
Loy converted her second penalty stroke of the 2003 season to give Old Dominion a 1-0 lead at the 21:30 of the first half. The goal marked her fourth game-winning goal of the year.
Loy's second goal of the night came at the 29:03 mark of the second half off a penalty corner set up by sophomore Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, PA).
ThePride had an opportunity to break the CAA's scoreless streak against Old Dominion as they were awarded a penalty corner with the clock reading 0:00, but the Lady Monarch defense stepped up not allowing Hofstra any attempts on goal.
The Lady Monarchs outshot their opponent, 10-9, while both teams managed to take eight penalty corners. In net, senior Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) recorded her third shutout making six saves in goal. The Pride's Jessica Cowperthwait made six saves in net as well.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday when they travel to Philadelphia to meet the Drexel Dragons, a game that ends their six-game road trip. The game is set to begin at noon.
