NORFOLK, VA.--The sixth ranked ODU soccer Monarchs (6-0) got second half goals fromBrian Cvilikas (Highland Ranch, CO.) and Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) todefeat fifth ranked Wake Forest, 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the ODU soccer stadium.
The Monarchs have still not allowed a goal and this is the team's third win over a top20 opponent this year. The 6-0 start is ODU's best since 1991.
After a scorelss first half, Cvilikas, a sophomore got the ball on the right side ofthe net and hit it pass Wake Forest's goalkeeper William Hesmer. With less than threeminutes remaining in the match Attila Vendegh got a break-a-way to put ODU up for goodat 2-0.
"Wake Forest is a very good team, and we had two great matches with them last year," saidODU head coach Alan Dawson. "Today, we showed a lot of resilience. We were able to controlthings a little bit. We've played solid soccer all year, and our depth has been veryimportant to us." Last year, WFU defeated ODU, 2-1 in Norfolk, and 1-0 in the NCAA secondround in Winston-Salem.
The Monarchs outshot Wake Forest, 13-11 and goalkeeper Samuel Cameron (Rockville, MD.)posted his sixth shutout. He came up with seven saves on the day.
Earlier this year, ODU defeated #5 Stanford and #19 California. The Monarchs host the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (ranked fourth in the region) on Wednesdaynight at 7 p.m.
