NORFOLK- Old Dominion scored four second half goals within a span of 18 minutes to defeat St. Francis (Pa.) in their season opener, 4-0. Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO.), Trevor McEachron (Woodbridge, VA.), Ross Mackenzie (Richmond, Va.)and Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) each scored for ODU.
After a scoreless first half, ODU sophomore Brian Cvilikas got a pass from KyleHartley (Va. Beach, VA.) for the first goal four minutes into the second half. Five minuteslater Trevor McEachron's header in heavy traffic put ODU up, 2-0. Six minutes later, freshman Ross Mackenzie scored on an assist from Eric Hoglund (Fairfax, Va.).
Two-Time CAA Player of the Year Attila Vendegh tallied ODU's final score onan assist from Kevon Harris with about 22 minutes remaining (the same two hooked up inODU's tying goal in the Virginia exhibition. The Monarchs outshot St. Francis, 16-3 and senior Samuel Cameron (Raleigh, NC.) picked up the shutout. St. Francis was led by Bernie Showers who had all three shot attempts, while goalkeeper Bobby Pipech had 12 saves.
The Monarchs return to action next weekend when the travel to Berkeley, CA. for a tournament featuring host California and fourth ranked Stanford.
