WILLIAMSBURG, VA - Freshman Willy Morales (Humacao, PR.) slammed hisfirst collegiate homerun in the ninth and sophomore pitcher Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA.) went the distance with a five-hitter to lead Old Dominion to a 4-2 non conference victory over William and Mary Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

With the game tied at one in the top of the ninth, Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.) walked, Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.) followed with a single. Morales, with two outs hit the three-run homer over the rightfield fence to give ODU a 4-1 lead. The Monarchs first runcame on a two-out single by Allen Strick which plated Joe Moore (Woodbridge, Va.). Strick andArrowood led ODU with two hits each.

Verlander did not give up a hit until the fifth. He gave up five hits, walked four andfanned 11. He is now 7-4 on the year with a 1.92 earned run average with 123 strikeoutsin 103 innings. Verlander has fanned ten or more six times this year.

The Tribe (27-16) tied the game in the sixth as Tim Jones singled home Mitch Walk. Inthe bottom of the ninth with two outs, John Lentz walked, then Trey Wakefield and KylePadgett hit back-to-back singles to make it 4-2 before Verlander retired Mike DeCarloon a groundout.

ODU (16-28) breaks for exams before hosting Towson in a three-game CAA series beginning next Friday.
