NORFOLK, VA.-- Old Dominion University pitching held the Towson Tigers tojust six hits and one run in the Monarchs, 6-1 CAA victory Saturday night at the Bud MethenyBaseball Complex. Towson is 27-23 overall and 10-9 in the CAA, while ODU is17-29 overall, and 5-11 in the CAA.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Jeremy Stifler opened with asingle, followed by a walk to Derek Dixon. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice buntby Tom Trela, then Stifler scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Marcozzi. Towson threatenedin the fifth and seventh innings, but ODU's defense came up with double plays toget out of trouble.
ODU tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Dana Arrowood Woodbridge, VA.) scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth inning Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.) doubled with one out, then scored on an RBI single by Steven Harris (Va.Beach, VA.).
In the seventh, John Oehler (Audobon, NJ.) scored on an RBI single by Evan Chipman(Raleigh, NC.) to make it 3-1. The Monarchs then scored three runs in the eighth as Justin Gregula singled in Steven Harris. Brandon LeNoir (Ocala, FL.) stole home and Joe Moore (Woodbrcompleted the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Gregula.
ODU freshman Ricky Shefka (Kinston, NC) picked up his sixth win of the year. He worked seven innings, Kevin Evans (Shamong, NJ.) and Donnie Smith (Norfolk, Va.) pitched the final two frames. Shefka has now lowered his ERA to 3.81.
Brandon LeNoir and John Oehler led ODU with two hits each, while Shane Justis ledTowson with two hits. The two teams play again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
