RICHMOND, VA. -- Virginia Commonwealth defeated Old Dominion behind the pitching of MichaelLeishman, 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Diamond. Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.) led theMonarchs with two hits and two steals on the day.
The Rams, who lead the CAA with a 7-1 record are 25-7 overall and won for the fifthstraight time to earn the sweep of ODU. The Monarchs drop to 10-19 overall and 1-4in CAA play. Leishman pitched six innings allowing two hits , walking four and fanning threeto pick up his fourth win of the year. The Rams pitching staff sports one of the nation'sbest earned run averages at 2.34.
The Monarchs lone run came in the sixth as Evan Chipman led off with a walk, was sacrificedto second by Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.), then scored on a sacrifice fly out byBrent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA.).
VCU scored three in the fourth on five hits, including RBI singles by Jeff Parrish,Barrett Ripley and Paul Swack. In the fifth inning, with runners on first and third,Anthony Granato stole home to make it 4-0. VCU added two more runs in the seventh as JustinMattison and Nick Jones knocked in runs.
Chipman, who is hitting .412 in CAA games leads the Monarchs in stolen bases with 15 in19 attempts. Senior Kevin Evans (Shamong, NJ.) started the game because James Burok (Archbald,PA.) had soreness in his pitching shoulder.
Old Dominion returns to action on Tuesday when they host the Keydets of VMI at 7 p.m. inthe Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
