The Old Dominion baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action on Sunday. The Dragons shutout the visiting Monarchs in the first game, 5-0, and then took the nightcap, 11-9.
Nic Beecher allowed only three hits while striking out six and walking one to earn the win for Drexel in game one. Beecher moved to 2-7 on the season while ODU's Ricky Shefka gave up five runs on seven hits and took the loss, falling to 4-7.
The Dragons scored four runs in the opening frame, highlighted by a lead off triple by Jeff Lamb. They added an insurance run in the sixth with a run scoring single by Jason Bailey, his second RBI of the game.
Drexel jumped out to early advantage again in the second game as they pushed three runs across the plate in the first inning, including a Josh Yocum two run homerun. After scoring rallies in the sixth and seventh, DU had built themselves an 11-1 advantage. However, ODU would find some offense and start a late game rally of their own. The Monarchs scored five in the eighth to make the score 11-6. Three nine inning runs would bring the visitors within two, 11-9, but Mike Lynch came in for Drexel and shut the door on ODU.
Jarame Beaupre picked up his third win of the season for the Dragons, giving up two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings.
With the two wins today Drexel improves to 9-27 overall and 2-12 in the CAA while the Monarchs fall to 14-27 on the season and 4-10 in league-play.
ODU will visit the University of Richmond on Monday at 3:00 p.m. The Monarchs defeated the nationally ranked Spiders 4-3 earlier this season.
