NORFOLK, VA. - Jon Ryhmes sacrifice fly, scored Trey Wakefield to give Williamand Mary a 2-1, 13 inning, Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion Saturday evening. The Tribe improves to 24-15 overall and 7-3 in the CAA, while ODU is now 12-24overall, 3-7 in the CAA. The athletic department retired the jersey #3 of coaching greatBud Metheny prior to the start of the contest.
After five-plus scoreless inning, ODU pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth.Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.) singled, went to second on a pass ball. He then scored on Derek James' (Terre Haute, IN.) single. William and Mary tied the game in the eighth as Tim Jones singled with one out. After being sacrificed to second, he scored on Trey Wakefield's single.
Both starting pitchers, Chris Ray of William and Mary and James Burok (Archbald,PA), of ODU were locked in a pitchers duel for eight innings. Burok finished with seven strikeouts,two walks, while Ray struckout no one, but walked only one. Both gave up six hits each.
Reliver Bill Bray picked up the win as he fanned seven in the five innings of relief,while Donnie Smith took the loss, his first of the season. He fanned three in five innings.Trey Wakefield led the Tribe with three hits. Michael Brown and Ben Keaton eachhad two hits for W&M. Allen Strick and Willy Morales(Humacao, PR) led ODU with two hits each.
The 13 inning contest fell two innings shy of the school record of 15 set in 1989at Clemson and VCU. The two teams will play the final game of the league series on Sundayat 2 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Complex.
