NORFOLK, VA. - Freshman lefthander Forrest Cory pitched a complete game three-hit shutout, and Kyle Padgett knocked in three runs as William and Mary defeated Old Dominion, 7-0 in a Colonial Athletic Association game Friday nigth at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Cory didn't allow the Monarchs a hit after the fourth inning. Only two Monarchs reachedbase after the fourth, John Oehler walked and Steven Harris was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning. It was Cory's second complete game shutout of the season.
The Tribe (23-15/6-3) scored six runs, four unearned runs off Justin Verlander. In the third, John Lentz singled home Chris Rahl and Mitch Walk . In the fourth Mitch Walk knocked in Mike DeCarlo. The Tribe scored three more times in the seventh as Kyle Padget doubled with the bases loaded, scoring Michael Brown, Lentz and Trey Wakefield. In the eighth inning Walk singled home DeCarlo for the Tribe's final run.
Allen Strick's single in the fourth was the last ODU (12-23/3-6) hit in the game. Sophomore Evan Chipman had ODU's other two hits. The last the Monarchs were shutout was back on March 7 against Clemson. Verlander fanned seven and walked five on the evening.
The two teams will play again on Saturday at 5 p.m. Prior to the game,there will be a ceremony to retire jersey #3 worn by ODU legendary coach Bud Metheny.
