Monarch Coaching Great Bud Metheny Dies At Age 87

NORFOLK, VA. -- The number #3 worn by ODU Baseball coaching legend Bud Methenywill be retired Saturday before the Monarchs game with William and Mary, atapproximately 4:45 p.m.

Metheny, who spent 32 years at the University from 1948-1980 was 423-363-6, wontwo NCAA College Division East Regional Championships, and was the 1964 CollegeDivision National Coach of the Year died on Jan. 2.

Metheny was the last New York Yankee to wear #3 before it was retired in honorof Babe Ruth in 1947. Metheny played the outfield for the Yankees from 1943to 1946.

He came to the Norfolk Division (as ODU was known then) in 1948. Metheny not onlycoached baseball, but was the men's basketball head coach from 1948-1965, compilinga 198-163 with 16 winning seasons. He also served as the University's athleticdirector from 1963-1970.

Following his retirement it was only fitting to honor Bud with the namingof the new baseball stadium in 1983 and with the adoption of the blue andwhite pin stripes of the Yankees on uniforms.

Metheny is a member of the College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, the OldDominion University Sports Hall of Fame, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, theWilliam and Mary Hall of Fame and the Tidewater Baseball Hall of Fame.
