Raleigh, NC -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team fell 4-2 to N.C. State falling to 6-7 on the season at the Cary Tennis Center to end a four-match win streak for the Lady Monarchs. With a looming threat of rain, coaches and officials opted to play the singles matches first, as opposed to the general ITA format. Play was delayed initially because of showers that rolled through before noon.
NC State (6-6) picked up its four points with wins in the middle of the line up. Kristin Lam got a solid win in the number two slot with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over ODU's freshman Maretha Van Niekerk. Loni Worsley, who has now won seven of her last eight, put away rookie Kerstin Endlich in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the three-seed match. Myrna Bawono shutout senior Julia Sotiriu in the four-seed for a 6-0, 6-0 win. The Wolfpack Jennifer Jassawalla's win came at the five seed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Coralie Herrmann.
Old Dominion got its points at No. 1 and No. 6 singles with wins by #18 Nataly Cahana and freshman Verena Munzinger, respectively. Cahana, who improved to 12-1 at No. 1 singles, downed Danielle Stadelmann, 6-2, 6-0, and Munzinger defeated Carmen Torres in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action on Tuesday hosting CAA rival and ninth ranked William and Mary.
